Sanskrit is not only a language of our heritage and culture but is also a window to know and learn the treasure of scientific achievements and researches that have been done in ancient India. Sanskrit language and literature is a great repository of knowledge encompassing every walk of life, be it Science, Technology, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Botany, Mathematics, Gemology, Management, Phonetics, Economy, Ecology, Philosophy, Linguistic, Sociology, Arts, Astronomy, Architecture, Medicine, Metallurgy, Agriculture etc. In today‘s globalised economy and in the context of knowledge society, We need Sanskrit more than ever before to preserve our moorings to bridge the ancient and the modern, to unravel the knowledge contained in the ancient texts, to protect our intellectual property rights, to explore new revenue of innovations and to lead Bharat into the forefront of the future knowledge driven globe. The Department of Sanskrit is one of the oldest departments of Govt. College Sundargarh, imparting teaching in Under Graduate and Post Graduate classes.
1983- Newly opened UG Sanskrit Pass course, marking the beginning of Sanskrit studies.
1986- Honors course introduced with 8 seats, providing opportunities for advanced learning.
1992- Enhancement of Honors seats from 8 to 16, reflecting growing demand.
1996- Further enhancement of Honors seats from 16 to 24, expanding accessibility.
2022- Honors seats increased from 24 to 32, accommodating more students.
2023- Newly opened PG course, catering to advanced research and academic pursuits.
To establish the department of Sanskrit as a center of excellence recognized for:

Character building and value-based education.
Developing skilled and knowledgeable Sanskrit scholars.
Promoting India’s rich culture and heritage.
Preparing students for academic and professional pursuits.
Introducing the students to various branches of Indian knowledge system,
promoting the research of shastric texts using modern methods.
To preserve, promote and propagate the Sanskrit language, literature and culture fostering academic excellence, critical thinking and intellectual curiosity. Improving the skills of students in spoken Sanskrit, providing a conductive environment for learning that prepares the students to achieve all types of meaningfulness in their lives as responsible individual as well as global citizens.
