The Department of Anthropology is a recent addition to the Government College Sundargarh, established during the academic session of 2023-24. Anthropology Department emphasis on holistic understanding of human beings and dedicated to providing quality education, research, and training for both tribal and non-tribal individuals to prepare them for employment in various government and Non-government organizations." Sundargarh district comes under the fifth scheduled area, which is highly tribal-dominated, with more than 50% of the population belonging to various tribal communities. Because of this, department always tries to identify the problems and challenges face by tribal communities in this area and tried to conducts research on these issues.
In the territorial map of Odisha, Sundargarh District is famous for its large area of dense forest, natural waterfalls and different mines.
