The Department of Odia was established in 1958 with the objective to provide quality education in Odia Language & Literature in Arts, Science & Commerce streams. It started functioning from the very first day of the inception of Government College, Sundargarh, since Odia is the ‘mother tongue' of the State. Here, Odia is taught as M.I.L(Now AECC), Optional (Now G.E/ Minor Course) & Honours (Now, Major Core Course) at U.G level. Also, P.G course in Odia started in 1994. The Department, at present, has five faculty out of six posts. The Department of Odia imparts quality education in Odia Language & Literature through classroom lectures. The performance of the students is monitored by regular class tests, seminars, assignments, mid and end-semester examinations. The students are trained to read, write, speak & interpret texts of Odia language & literature. Under the able guidance of the departmental teachers the students have been able to secure ranks among the top-ten under Sambalpur University. Moreover, our students received gold medals consecutively in P.G Exam. 2022 & 2023. A student of our department secured the seventh position in U.G Examination 2023.
The Department of Odia envisions to transform itself into a hub of research- oriented teaching & learning where utmost priority will be given to inculcating literary interests in the students. The Department, through its manifold activities will be able to nurture the intellectual inclination of the students towards the 'mother tongue' of the State, i.e, Odisha. Also, the Department dreams of a well-equipped mansion for the all-round development of the students through an intensive anthropomorphic study of Odia Language & Literature.
The goal of the Department of Odia would mainly focus on creating literary interest in the tribal students, speaking in dialects like Sadri, Mundari, Kissan etc. in a region where most of the people speak in 'Agria' dialect. The departmental teachers are committed to helping the students better understand values of human life, themselves & the people around them. Aso, the Department aims at invigorating the students' body, mind & soul & transforming them into responsible & empathetic citizens. Other aspects of the Department are as follows: ? To enable the students, understand that literature is a means of exploring life & what it is to be human. ? To help the students understand people, societies, events & cultures of countries across the world. ? To equip the students with the skill of effective communication with individual & groups of people. ? To prepare the students for expressing & communicating thoughts, feelings & attitude toward life & savour the flavors of imagination & delight.
